Your Subaru Forester has been a real trooper over the years, getting your family and everyone’s accompanying gear where it needs to go with room to spare. At some point, however, a threshold is crossed. There’s a new dog, or maybe the kids are getting bigger (along with their accompanying gear). It’s time to upsize, and staying in the Subaru family of SUVs seems the logical choice.
But which is the biggest? It all depends on how you look at it, because while the Ascent is the biggest Subaru SUV by length, height, and seating, it doesn't hold the most cargo. That distinction goes to a model you might not expect.
How Do Subaru's SUVs Compare in Size?
Here's a Subaru SUV size comparison of the current lineup:

Ranked three ways, this Subaru size comparison gets pretty interesting:
By length: Ascent, Outback, Trailseeker, Forester
By seating: Ascent (up to eight), then everyone else at five
By max cargo: Outback, Ascent, Trailseeker, Forester
So, again, “bigness” depends on how you look at it. We also want to call out that the Ascent cargo figures listed above are for the Premium trim. Other Ascent trims top out at 72.8 cu ft. Forester figures are for Premium and up. The base Forester has 29.6 and 74.4 cu ft.
One more to watch: the 2027 Subaru Getaway, a three-row electric SUV that early reviews put at roughly Ascent size. Subaru first targeted late 2026 for its arrival, but reports say the launch has been pushed back, and full dimensions aren’t out yet. Ask our team for the latest.
Which Subaru Has the Most Cargo Space?
The Outback wins on this one. With the rear seats up, you get 34.6 cubic feet, and folding them down opens up 80.5. Here's how the Ascent compares:
Behind the third row: 17.8 cu ft
Behind the second row (third row folded): 43.5 cu ft
Max, with both rows folded: 75.6 cu ft
Why does the longer vehicle hold less? The Ascent spends its extra length on a third row of people. Fold that row and it beats the Outback's seats-up space, but on max cargo, the Outback still wins.
So make your pick based on what rides in back most days: people or gear. If it's gear, you want an Outback. See the Outbacks currently on our lot.
What Are the Subaru Ascent Dimensions, and Who Exactly Needs That Much SUV?
Here are the Subaru Ascent dimensions:
Length: 196.8 inches
Height: 71.6 inches
Wheelbase: 113.8 inches
Ground clearance: 8.7 inches
Seating: 7 (captain's chairs) or 8 (second-row bench)
Towing: up to 5,000 lbs
No other model in the lineup gives you a third row. That's what makes it the biggest Subaru SUV. You'll feel it most on carpool days, or when the grandparents ride along with the fam.
For 2027, Subaru starts the Ascent Premium at $40,795 MSRP (plus destination), and you can pick a 7- or 8-passenger layout on the Premium and Limited trims.
At just over 16 feet long, though, it's worth measuring your garage first, especially if there's a workbench in there. Ready to look? Browse Ascent inventory.
What Are the Subaru Outback Dimensions After the Redesign?
The 2026 redesign changed the Subaru Outback dimensions less than its new, boxier look suggests:
Length: 191.7 inches
Height: 67.5 inches (1.4 inches taller than before)
Wheelbase: 108.1 inches
Ground clearance: 8.7 inches (9.5 on the Wilderness)
Cargo: 34.6 cu ft, up from 32.6 on the previous Outback
Rear passengers gain 1.4 inches of headroom. Towing tops out at 2,700 lbs with the standard 2.5L engine and 3,500 lbs with the 2.4L turbo.
You'll seat five, which is the Outback's one real trade-off against the Ascent. If five seats cover your crew, the Subaru Outback dimensions give you more cargo room in a vehicle that's about five inches shorter and easier to park on Market Street.
Where Do the Subaru Trailseeker Dimensions Fit In?
The Trailseeker is Subaru's all-electric, wagon-style SUV, and its numbers land close to the Outback's. Here are the Subaru Trailseeker dimensions:
Length: 190.8 inches
Height: 65.9 inches
Wheelbase: 112.2 inches
Ground clearance: 8.5 inches
Cargo: 31.3 cu ft seats up, 74.0 max (30.4 and 71.8 with the moonroof)
Range: up to 281 miles, EPA-estimated (Premium)
The Trailseeker's cargo floor runs 47 inches from the liftgate to the rear seat, compared with 42.8 inches in the 2026 Outback. That's extra room for skis, a folded stroller, or a flat-pack bookshelf. It'll tow up to 3,500 lbs, too.
Think this might be the one? Check Trailseeker availability.
So Which Size Fits Your Life (and Your Garage)?
A Subaru SUV size comparison only helps when you match it to how you live:
Choose the Ascent if six or more people ride with you most weeks.
Choose the Outback if gear outnumbers passengers and you want the most cargo space.
Stay with the Forester if you're close to fine and just need a little more room.
Choose the Trailseeker if you’re ready to go electric and you haul long stuff like skis or flat-pack furniture.
The biggest Subaru SUV isn't always the right one. Buy for the crew you carry most weeks, not the one road trip a year. A rooftop box can cover that trip, but a too-small SUV leaves you short every Saturday. Our Subaru size comparison above should get you close. Your own gear will tell you the rest.
Will Your Gear Fit? Find Out for Yourself
You know which Subaru has the most cargo space now, and you know which is the biggest Subaru SUV. Numbers on a page only get you so far, though. What settles the matter is packing your own stuff in the back and seeing if it fits. And with holiday road trips and winter sports of all kinds right around the corner, now’s a good time to do just that.
Tell us what you haul. Send our team a quick note with how many people ride with you, the gear that has to fit, and how long your garage is.
We’ll match you up. You’ll hear which models fit and what’s on the lot right now.
Load it yourself. Bring the dog crate and the kids’ gear to your test drive. If the liftgate closes on the first try, you’ve found your SUV!
